Learn About the Universal College Application While the Common Application is still the online application format of choice for the majority of colleges that do not use their own applications exclusively, a few dozen schools have also begun to accept the Universal College Application. Some use this newer format exclusively or in addition to their own institutional application, but many accept both the Universal College Application and the Common Application, leaving the choice up to the applicant. So what’s the difference? The Common Application is accepted by nearly 700 colleges and universities across the country and internationally as of the 2016-2017 application cycle. About a third of these colleges are Common Application exclusive, meaning that they do not have a separate institutional application or accept applications in any other format. The Common Application actively originally promoted a philosophy of â€Å"equity, access, and integrity,†meaning that member colleges used a holistic approach to their application review process, taking into account letters of recommendation, the personal essay, and any other supplemental information provided by the student in addition to test scores and high school grades. This requirement, however, has eased recently as the Common Application works to bring more schools into the fold. The Universal College Application has never promoted any specific philosophy or application requirements. Colleges must simply be accredited institutions that adhere to the National Association for College Admissions Counseling Statement of Principles of Good Practice in order to use the Universal College Application. Only 34 colleges and universities currently use this application, and they vary widely in size and prestige, including everything from Ivy League and other highly selective schools to small, private liberal arts colleges. Like the current Common Application, colleges on the Universal College Application do not have to require letters of recommendation or a personal essay. Most members do still require these elements, but some, including the Milwaukee School of Engineering, the University of Tampa, and Nazareth College, have chosen to make the personal essay optional. But even for the majority of schools who do require an essay, the Universal College Application does not have specific prompts. The personal essay can be on any topic the student chooses (an option that was eliminated from the Common Application in 2013) as long as it’s no longer than 650 words. Aside from these differences, these two applications are fairly similar. Both ask the same basic questions on biographical and family information, academic records, and extracurricular activities, and there aren’t many significant differences in the format of the applications- which isn’t too surprising, as they were, in fact, created by the same company, Applications Online. But will using a different application put you ahead of the pack during the application review and admissions process? As far as most colleges are concerned, no. According to the Princeton admissions office, â€Å"We view the two applications as equivalent and treat them equally. Please feel free to submit whichever application you prefer. Cornell, another Ivy that accepts both formats, takes a similar stance. From their admissions website: â€Å"Although there are slight differences in the applications, it is important to recognize that both applications provide us with the critical information that our selection committees will need to make thoughtful admissions decisions, and they will be viewed equally.†At the end of the day, both applications serve the same purpose: to help the admissions office decide if you’re a good fit for their school. But if you’re still unsure of which application to use, here are a few more fast facts that might tip the scales in favor of one or the other: Looking to get a head start on the application process? The Universal College Application launches a month earlier than the Common Application, on July 1 rather than August 1.If you’re applying to a number of schools, keep in mind that the Common Application has more than 650 member colleges compared to the Universal College Application’s 34, so the odds are much better that most, if not all, of the colleges on your list accept it. Make a list of all of your colleges and which applications they accept; if only one or two are on the Universal College Application, it will certainly save you some time to stick to the Common Application.The Universal College Application has a few additional features that may appeal to the technologically savvy applicants out there. It is compatible with most tablets and mobile devices, so you can edit your application on the go. Also, if you have a website or other online content that you’d like to share with the schools you’r e applying to, this application has a section to add those links. (Do yourself a favor, though, and leave the link to your Facebook out of that section.) Ultimately, whether you apply to your dream school via the Common Application, the Universal College Application, or the college’s own institutional application, the most important decision you should be making during the process is not the paper (or website) you put the information on, but how to present yourself in the best possible light to tell the college who you are and why you’d be a great addition to their student body. Also, with the Common Application loosening the restrictions on its membership and with the emergence of the new Coalition Application, the future of the Universal College Application is uncertain. While the other two applications have been gaining members, the Universal College Application lost a dozen members in the past couple of years. As of the 2016-2017 admissions cycle, 34 colleges and universities accept the Universal College Application, ranging from highly selective Ivy League institutions to small, private liberal arts colleges and research universities. Any accredited institution that adheres to the National Association for College Admissions Counseling Statement of Principles of Good Practice is permitted to use the Universal College Application. The Nevada Silver Rush Some of us keep watching the skies, as the old movie told us to do. Geologists watch the ground instead. Really looking at whats around us is the heart of good science. Its also the best way to start a rock collection or to strike gold. The late Stephen Jay Gould told a story about his visit to Olduvai Gorge, where the Leakey Institute digs up ancient human fossils. Institute staffers were attuned to the mammals whose fossil bones occur there; they could spot a mouse tooth from several meters away. Gould was a snail specialist, and he didnt find a single mammal fossil during his week there. Instead, he turned up the first fossil snail ever recorded at Olduvai! Truly, you see what you look for. Horn Silver and the Nevada Rush The Nevada silver rush, which began in 1858, may be the truest example of a gold rush. In the California gold rush, like those before and after, the Forty-Niners swarmed into the land and panned the easy nuggets from the stream placers. Then the geologic pros moved in to finish the job. The mining corporations and hydraulic syndicates thrived on the deep veins and low-pay ores that the panners couldnt touch. Mining camps like Grass Valley had a chance to grow into mining towns, then into stable communities with farms and merchants and libraries. Not in Nevada. Silver there formed strictly on the surface. Over millions of years of desert conditions, silver sulfide minerals weathered out of their volcanic host rocks and slowly turned, under the influence of rainwater, to silver chloride. The climate of Nevada concentrated this silver ore in supergene enrichment. These heavy gray crusts were often polished by dust and wind to the dull luster of a cow horn- horn silver. You could shovel it right off the ground, and you didnt need a Ph.D. to find it. And once it was gone, there was little or nothing left beneath for the hard-rock miner. A big silver bed could be tens of meters wide and more than a kilometer long, and that crust on the ground was worth up to $27,000 a ton in 1860s dollars. The territory of Nevada, along with the states around it, was picked clean in a few decades. The miners would have done it faster, but there were dozens of remote ranges to prospect on foot, and the climate was so damnably harsh. Only the Comstock Lode supported silver mining by large combines, and it was depleted by the 1890s. It supported a federal mint in Nevadas capital, Carson City, which made silver coins with the CC mint mark. Mementos of the Silver State In any one place, the surface bonanzas lasted only a few seasons, long enough to put up saloons and not much else. Ultimately producing lots of ghost towns, the rough, violent life of so many Western movies reached its purest state in the Nevada silver camps, and the economy and politics of the state have been deeply marked ever since. They dont shovel silver off the ground anymore but sweep it instead, off the tables of Las Vegas and Reno. Nevada horn silver seems to be gone forever. Scouring the Web for specimens pans out nothing. You can find silver chloride on the Web under its mineral name of chlorargyrite or cerargyrite, but the specimens arent horn silver, even though thats what cerargyrite means in scientific Latin. Theyre little crystals from underground mines, and the sellers seem apologetic about how unexciting they look. Still. Take a moment to imagine the thrill of stepping back into this period of American history and picking up chunks of silver right off the surface of the ground, like so much gravel... and gaining a fortune.

The asymmetric design was the reason why the building collapsed so easily. A pro per earthquake resistant building must have the roofs and floor slabs in the horizontal planes. The columns and beams should have been properly interconnected ensuring strength of the building. Operations Manager: This person is responsible for the selection of the materials which are necessary for the construction. The materials should be shock resistant in order to be categorized as safe materials. The safety level of the building would depend on the selection of the materials. The building safety and lives of people would be at stake if they are not protected against the tremors of an earthquake in an earthquake prone zone. Junior Engineers: The junior engineers who were responsible for the project were not capable. They were sent for approval of the project.... The report analyses the reasons and the people involved in the process. It finds out that if these people had been a little more careful this situation could have been avoided. The engineers on their part had approved projects that were not viable. It can also be concluded that before the project was undertaken there was lack of strict vigilance and the proper process of project approval was not undertaken. There were flaws in selection of the team members, the team of engineers, the materials supplied failed to match up with the standards and the improper execution of the constructions mechanisms can be cited as the reasons behind the collapse. The safety standards were not followed in spite the building falling within an earthquake prone area. The regular checks of the vigilance team and from the government were not undertaken and so there was no one to clear the doubt situation. Although the building had good insurance coverage the people working inside the building were not train ed with adequate training which may come in handy in situations of disasters. The above mentioned key role players could have prevented the entire situation only provided each party did their work diligently. Here we can see that there is negligence and disregard among all the key role players which collectively contributed to the occurrence of the building devastation. Proper audit and investigation before the occurrence of the incident would have stopped it from happening and saved more lives.

Having lived a poverty-stricken life, my father suffered some physical ailments-year-old was not even aware of. He did not have the ability to bring himself to the hospital so that no one even knew what he was suffering from. For lack of resources, my mother had to attend to my father’s needs only to ease his pains before his death. As a child, I saw my mother’s sufferings, crying as she spoke to my father, pleading to him to get well very soon. For me, those were nothing. I cried with my mother simply because she was crying but I never understood that behind the sufferings and impending death of my father, my mother was thinking about how she was to raise three young children. When my father finally died, my mother howled. I can still vaguely remember my mother weeping beside my father’s cadaver. She was inconsolable. My uncles and aunts tried to comfort her but their efforts were all in vain. I guess my mother only stopped when she finally got tired and had no more energy to weep for her beloved husband. I guess I could say that one of the biggest mountains that I have been through is the death of my father. As I mentioned earlier, I did not understand very well the things that were happening then however, I have suffered the consequences with my family. We have always been in want. My mother tried some menial jobs and the food was not always enough. Also, my education together with my siblings’, were always at risk because the mother was almost always ready to give up on us when times get really tough. As I grew older and as I begun to understand the death of my father and our the suffering, I came to appreciate my mother and decide to do everything in my power to help my mother out of the poverty we have been bound to. Thankfully, I have an uncle who made it his personal goal to help my mother raise her children. He was a kind person, working more hours and managing his resources well in order for him to be able to help us not only financially but also with his kind words, encouragement and quality time with us. My uncle believed in our capabilities. He always mentioned our poverty not to make us feel bad but to challenge us. He always found time to support me and my siblings to study well despite our situation because he claimed it is the only key available to us to open doors for better opportunities. I still remember him saying that we have so many things which can make us succeed which are not even present among rich and famous people. I learned from my uncle that at such trying times, the inner characteristics of a man are put to a test and the fiery trials are what brings out the best in him. I looked up to my uncle as a wise counselor and a model. Looking back, I think I did well in trusting him because, in times of great challenges, his words often rang in my head and my heart.
